As a Big Sky Interior Designer, where do you purchase furniture, rugs and accessories?

I am a professional shopper. I have been all my professional career. From Word Records where I had to source creative and cutting edge marketing ideas and products to The Odee Company where I sourced products for customers from all over the world to Tatom Design, my reason for being put on this earth is to shop! To find the best product at the best price is one of my biggest thrills! It was easier when I decorated homes in Dallas, of course. I had thousands of options to shop. Becoming a Big Sky Interior Designer and has helped me continue to find unique sourcing avenues for what I need to furnish my clients homes. After a whole career of shopping for clients, developing skills in negotiations and having numerous sources for any one product I am able to give great value to my clients.

I use any avenue to source furnishings for clients. I use the internet, travel to Bozeman and Billings, attend auctions, go to Market in Dallas and Las Vegas take trips to Santa Fe and Denver and use my Dallas connections to make sure that clients have the best possible trends and fashions to furnish their mountain homes. I have contacts with reps all over the country from the East Coast to the West Coast to make sure I have numerous options to show clients. My contacts source rugs, furniture, lighting, accessories, fixtures, etc…It is a busy life but I enjoy it! My husband thinks I’m a little crazy but what does he know!

My shopping allows me to have numerous options and angles on how to furnish homes from high end luxury homes, to rustic ski homes, to quaint cabins. I can be hanging moose heads and old ship lap to overseeing installation of the finest marble or granite countertops in the same day.

I love being a Big Sky Interior Designer with all the varieties of Mountain Interior Design. Getting involved in different facets from construction to Interior Design to a Redesign or freshening up a Mountain Home keeps the creative juices flowing. Should you have a future or present project you would like to talk about, I would love a chance to discuss it with you and get the opportunity to get to know you. Please feel free to call or email!

Being a Big Sky MT Interior Designer is no easy task when it just starts snowing!

So I thought I would give you my do good public service announcement for Big Sky. In my job as a Big Sky MT interior designer I get to drive a great many miles! Roads are very slick in the early season! I went to Bozeman and counted 6 cars off the road in the Canyon and many more in Bozeman! Not sure why it is so much slicker in the early part of the year until things get more solid. We have that thick, sticky snow that turns to an icy slippery mess. Even with snow tires and studs it seems to be difficult driving out there. If you are in a rental car go ahead and irritate some of us locals and drive way below the speed limit. Just use pullouts to let everyone pass! You can always view the scenery during the pullouts. Remember you came here to slow down and enjoy the scenery so just incorporate that in to your safe driving!

It gets this way the first 2 or 3 weeks of snow season and then returns in the late season. I look forward to roads getting packed and temperatures dropping to where the snow has more traction. This goes without saying but the downhills and the turns are what you should watch for at this time of the year. One of these pics is from our driveway which is an adventure this time of the year! Put in 4 wheel low, down shift to first gear and hold on for the ride!

If you are coming in December you should be fine and driving should be much improved for snow driving. If you can say that!

We are very busy at this time of the year with double digit projects going on most of which needs to be done by Christmas or before. What does Interior Design in Big Sky Encompass?

Sometimes we get asked what Interior Design services we help clients with on their homes here in Big Sky. The answer is in some ways all of the above. For most clients, this is their 2nd home. That means they may not be on site at all times during a build or redesign project. This can mean that we may be involved in the construction phase. We have many Builders and Architects in Big Sky that are incredibly capable artisans, that have great tastes and do a fantastic job. Clients sometimes feel that if we are going to be furnishing it that we should be involved at an early phase in picking finishes or the look. The weather can also affect interior design in Big Sky on how you furnish a home, colors, etc…Sometimes the homeowner may want help in a certain area of the home or may want a female opinion on paint colors, carpet, tile, etc… It gives them another eye to help make sure that the home fits together and has the right look and feel for the client.

Some clients bring us in to furnish the home after it is built. This starts with us having conversations and showing pictures and previous projects to get a feel for their tastes and likes. We then start showing furniture, accessories while shopping with them or send them pictures for them to approve. Furniture, etc.. starts getting delivered and we are able to show a room in the finished stage. There are always a few items we change out at that time but you start getting close to knowing what a clients likes and dislikes are. As more rooms are furnished you can start seeing the house take shape and the overall thought process of the interior design. This is the majority of what we do.

Some clients bring us in to redo a home either as a renovation construction wise or interior design wise. This can involve adding square footage, redoing a kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. Of course, this leads to picking tile, carpet, new paint, new finishes, appliances, moving or knocking out walls or any of a number of other things. It also usually involves new furniture and lighting, art and accessories. This can add substantial value to your home if done right. Some clients do this right before putting the house on the market with one of the great Realtors we have in Big Sky. Many times the Realtor gives solid ideas on what is the best way to increase the value of the home.

Since this is a big 2nd home rental market sometimes we are brought in by a Vacation Rental Management company or homeowner to help increase the amount of rental income a home can bring in. The Vacation Rental Management companies have great knowledge of how to increase rental income and what clients are looking for in a rental. For instance, if you can reconfigure a room to where the home can sleep more people that can open up more potential rental candidates. Couple that with the fact that if you have a very good Interior Design job and you have a real edge over other Big Sky properties. If your potential vacation renters are looking through the possibilities, sleeping more people in a good location in a well furnished house is a real advantage.

Finally, every once in a while we find a property that we will purchase ourselves and redo. Our factors we consider are location, undervalued home with great bones that just might need a little TLC. This involves a pretty intense 1-4 months for transforming a home into something that should sell for top dollar in the market. We have a surprise on one of our redos that we will be announcing in the upcoming months! So keep looking back for new and exciting news!

Rustic Modern Interior Design-Timeless or a Fad?

25 Swift Bear dining2

We have been doing a Rustic Modern style on a number of homes here in Big Sky Montana. I get asked whether this style is going to be dated or a fad when discussing client’s tastes. Rustic Modern is mostly about open, clean living and if done right it can be timeless! That being said when you start walking in Target and seeing rustic modern knockoff furniture everywhere and then go get a coffee and overhear someone talking about doing their house in rustic modern, we might have reached a saturation level. Just kidding! My opinion, if done right the simplification and clean, muted colors have a long time before they become dated in our busy lives craving simple, beautiful living. I’m going to outline my tenets of Rustic Modern Interior Design.

Rustic Modern Building Materials

Rustic modern style is about beautiful but low maintenance clean lines. It is about bringing rustic warmth with modern amenities. Outside of the house can be reclaimed wood, stone with clean lines and concrete that might be treated or stained. Once you walk in the home it is about bringing nature inside with big windows and an open floor plan. The windows, of course, need to be wood. This is one area you don’t want to skimp on with a rustic modern style. Don’t forget the 5th wall(ceiling)which is not ignored in a Rustic Modern style. At the very least, you can do faux beams but most times you finish the ceiling in wood with beams to accent and add to the home. Remember, we are trying to bring nature inside with the warmth of wood.

Rustic Modern Interior

Colors are going to be neutral, calming colors and the use of natural fabrics and animal rugs to add to the simple living. The kitchen should be very updated with appliances with clean lines and low care maintenance. The furniture is modern using leathers, natural fabrics and neutral colors with clean angular lines. Each person has their own tastes and I recently had a client where we did Rustic Modern and she is a color girl. We added some color with pillows and art. There is a very famous quote by an Interior Designer named Bunny Williams, “If you love something, it will work. That’s the only real rule.” She loved it and I loved it and most importantly, it worked for her and her family.

Rustic Lighting and Accessories

Lighting gives you the opportunity to add details and create the modern part of the Rustic Modern Interior Design. The shapes, type of lighting, shades, chandelier and sconces. The chandeliers, lamps and sconces can be metal with carefully chosen light to accent your modern look. It is your opportunity to make a statement and tie everything in between modern and rustic! Your accessories should accent everything else you have already done. Say if you have gone with lots of chrome on the furniture you can add silver trays, antlers and put skins on tables and floor and tie in with mirrors and other things that give the home a edgy look. We have chosen to do just blinds as window treatments in our modern rustic look.

Spring is Here in Big Sky!

Spring has come very early here in Big Sky. The resort prays for every inch of snow at this point! We did have @ 10 inches the other day! I heard that it was a fantastic day to go ski some powder! The Gallatin River has not shown that we have gone into full fledge runoff but it could be any day now. Golf course has no snow on it. Very, very early!

Here at Tatom Design this is a busy time of the year! Vacation homeowners are trying to spruce up or redecorate their properties to make them more appealing in pictures for renters. Does this work? Yes, we have seen dramatic increases for some properties that have updated their 80’s look to something more today’s style. Realtors are getting houses ready to sell and sometimes you need new paint, kitchen or bathroom redos to make them sell quick, at good prices! In addition to picking out tile, lighting, wood floors, etc…those that stage their homes to give prospective buyers a conceptualization of the home can sell very quickly. Our opinion is that you don’t need to stage the whole house just the main rooms and maybe that one room that is hard to conceptualize how it would work out. Then, of course, you have the homeowner that is building from out of town and can’t see the day to day questions and decisions that need to be made. Color of granite, does this stain look good with this paint and all sorts of questions that homeowners get presented by their builders. Builders do a very good job here of helping you make those decisions but some owners want design help to make it all fit together!

Needless to say we are busy! If we ever get a day off it is time to go to Yellowstone very soon. They will open in April for cars and are already open for bikes! If you want wildlife pictures(especially Grizzlies and Wolves)now is the time! Crowds are minimal and the wildlife is very active starting to forage for food. Of course, the fishing is excellent this time of the year. You just have to find a river not in runoff.

Just an update from us here in Big Sky at Tatom Design! Remember, if you need help on making a warm, inviting house that is what we do.
