Contemporary Mountain Cabin

This is a contemporary mountain cabin located at the base of Moonlight Basin in Big Sky, MT. This was a particularly fun project to work on alongside our client who craved a unique design that would serve their family’s needs. Together, we centered this design with the use leathers, animal furs, clean lines and natural tones. The final product is a light, airy, and contemporary design that has the perfect natural palette for a mountain-modern dream home. We loved putting together this sophisticated yet functional design.

Rustic Modern Rental Property

This incredible Silver Tip mountain home was so fun to furnish.  This project was an incredibly quick turnaround on a budget. We had 6 weeks to get this house ready for rentals! Designing in Big Sky is always a challenge. Adding a tight deadline means you have to get creative and rely on local Big Sky and Bozeman craftsman, and great local furniture stores like Montana Expressions to get the job done! We added a 10-foot kitchen island instead of a dining area to create a casual dining space for a more functional vacation home design. We created 3 master suites to accommodate the needs for this ski property. To further extend the use of this mountain cabin, we also added 2 bunk rooms that are perfect for large families traveling together. The art featured in the home was curated and customized by a great local artist, Tehya Braun. We loved using her paintings to add fun pops of color. In the spirit of creating a functional and practical mountain, rental property all of the material we used were made with performance fabrics. We loved creating this rustic and modern vacation rental in beautiful Big Sky MT.

Interior Designer Big Sky MT -Do you work outside of Big Sky?

One of the questions that I receive from Realtors, Builders and other potential clients is do you ever work outside of Big Sky MT? Of course! If you want to know about out of state, I have done projects in Texas and South Carolina. Most are talking local and I have done multiple projects in Bozeman and West Yellowstone. I travel anywhere within Montana and have travelled elsewhere. Once a client has a certain comfort level it is easy to do another home for them or their primary residence. I adapt to any theme or design quickly. I attribute that, to doing jobs in Dallas where Mountain Home is not high on the list of decorating themes to consider and the extensive time I have spent in areas such as Seaside, Florida and other beach areas. Being an Interior Designer Big Sky MT the area I would travel would certainly include these areas: Bozeman(of course), Ennis, Livingston, Big Timber, Manhattan, Three Forks and then Island Park, Idaho. The developments I have worked with in Big Sky are Spanish Peaks, Moonlight Basin, Big Sky Resort and all over Big Sky proper. If you live and work as an Interior Designer in Big Sky Montana, you are going to travel.

I’m known for being able to pull off an Interior Design job quicker than most designers.  In fact, close to half my Interior Decorating business is quick turn projects. So, I can travel anywhere and between on site and Internet I can do a design job very quickly. It might include an onsite visit with measuring, getting a feel for the client and house and then shipping in items and time on site to bring it all together. In Montana, you need to be able to do things remotely and then pull it all together if needed in just a few trips to minimize cost while creating a home that pleases the client!

What is key is the organization of ordering and delivery in a more rural setting. It brings me back to my former career of having to pull a number of media and print projects together and making it all come together within a timeframe. I did this for Fortune 500 companies under very tight time and budget constraints while sourcing products both internationally and domestic. It is very similar to the organization of construction, painter, appliances, furniture, etc..takes a special talent to communicate, organize and have everyone get along, while keeping the end goal in mind! Especially, as it gets close to transition times from construction wrapping up, cleaning of the house and furnishings starting to be delivered, placed and the final touches. There are a lot of moving parts!

So, if you are looking for an Interior Designer Big Sky MT located in SW Montana we may very well be the designer you are looking for! Feel free to look at our Portfolio page to see some of our recent projects. We can adapt to most any style! You can also check us out on Pinterest, Houzz and Facebook. Fly Fishing the Madison River

Quite a few people head through Big Sky for fly fishing vacations. You have quite a few choices of blue ribbon streams to choose from but I thought I would talk about the Madison River on this post. The Madison River is known for larger fish than the Gallatin and from Big Sky you have two choices of where to go fish the Madison(Maddy).

If you want a calm float you head north towards Bozeman and then take a left at 4Corners(Main & 191). Stay on that road and you run into the Maddy in about 30 minutes. This is called the Lower Maddy and is good for early season, winter fishing and beginning drift boaters. It is about a 7 mile float from Warm Springs to Black’s Ford. Where you run into the river is Black’s Ford. Just keep following the road upstream for 7 miles and you can’t miss Warm Springs. A calm river here, it is much more forgiving for a beginner’s float. You can still screw up but if you have rowed a canoe and pay attention it is the perfect classroom. Why early season and winter? Because this is float tube central during the summer and the temperature’s get high enough that fish are sluggish and get stressed easily. The float tubing is fun and can be anyone from college kids to families floating down the river. Pretty shallow and you can stand up in most places so it is nice for families. We float it while one person drives the RV to one of the pullouts and you can get out eat, relax and then continue on down the river. It is a 2-3 hour float or drift. If you are drift boating it is a good idea to stop and wade fish a nice pool.

The upper Maddy is a different river. You would drive south from Big Sky and turn right on 287 near Hebgen Lake. Continue past Quake Lake and you are quickly at the Upper Maddy. From Big Sky it is about 1.5 hours to the start. You can fish all the way into Ennis. The river has boulders and is a bigger river and opportunities for big fish. Not made for your first drift boat trip you have ever taken but once you know how to handle a drift boat it would be wise to take someone that has done it before and give it a try. Boats are turned over in this part of the Maddy and most all of us are going to bounce off at least one boulder on the float. Not trying to scare anyone just want everyone to be safe. You can wade in numerous spots. I would carry a wading stick to steady yourself. Three dollar bridge is a famous place to wade from. There are numerous public put ins and there are numerous opinions on which is the best float. You will most likely see several low bridges(rods down), buffalo jumps and a few bald eagles. I love to float this part during late summer, early fall when the hopper hatch is going on. Always, fish with a buddy and stay within eyesight of each other.

I would always talk to local fly shops and if you haven’t fly fished much I would highly recommend getting a guide for a day. Doesn’t guarantee you will catch fish but it certainly increases the odds and you will learn a lot.

One last very important thing! If you have a child that would like to catch a trout, take him/her over to Ennis and get some worms and a bobber at the grocery store and go to the pond. Fun will ensue! Click on the pic of my daughter to see the size fish you can catch. Just make sure and put them back so another child can have the same amount of fun!

Until next time, I hope you get a chance to enjoy Big Sky and if you need an Interior Decorator please let us know.

Fall Flyfishing in Big Sky Montana

Most of the crowds in Big Sky MT come once the snow starts falling but our beautiful town has a great deal to offer in other times of the year. The summer has become a very popular time as well for people to come hiking, mountain biking and then my personal favorite, fly fishing! We, like most people that, live up here have numerous people that want to come visit. Many of the men want to fly fish for Rainbow or Brown trout. Most want to come in June, July and August. What they don’t realize is that is not the best time to fish for trout. If you want to catch a bunch of big trout, Fall is the time to come. The later, the better. These pictures show a few trout out of a stupendous day with a friend catching a bunch of big trout. Fall is also the time for bugling elk and more sightings of all kinds of animals. The other reason to come is the reduced crowds. Oh wait, never mind. Forget you read this!

If you do ever come to Big Sky MT and decide to build your dream home and need a Big Sky MT Interior Decorator, let us know! We would love to help you! If you enjoyed this post you might also like Grizzly Bear In a Car!

Grizzly Bear in a Car!

Living near Yellowstone Park one of my favorite times of the year is just starting. Bears have come out of hibernation. Animals are active again and you get surprised every day that you are out driving and exploring. These pictures are from a couple of years ago and it was on a late April day in the park. There aren’t very many people this time of the year and most are experienced bear and wolf observers. Me being neither of those two things, sometimes you just luck out! I had been watching this grizzly for over 30 minutes from afar. He had been mixed in with some wary buffalos but then came right up to the road and decided to check out a Park Rangers car. She swore she had no food in the car but he was very curious. As you can see by the photos the Park takes Grizzlies getting into cars very seriously. The Ranger came up with rubber bullets in the shotgun. They get the bear’s attention without harming him. Okay, he might have a bruise for a few days but if he ever gets use to getting in people’s cars, he would have to be destroyed so a bruise is not all bad when you consider the alternative.

If you want to see animals and avoid the crowds, late April to early May and then late September until early November are the best times. I love September with the elk in rut and the bulls bugling and protecting their harem. It is a joy to live in Big Sky, MT and help create beautiful homes that people can come enjoy this gorgeous part of the World!
Let us know if you need help in decorating a home. We would love to help and show you some beautiful scenery!
