Montana Interior Design Firm – What Size Budgets Do You Work With?

This will be one of the first questions my future interior design clients will ask me. Big Sky, MT can be an expensive place but doesn’t always have to be. Budgets, first of all, depend on the scope of the design project. A Montana Interior Design Firm can save you money just from being local.

Are we talking about a home that someone purchased furnished that you just need to spruce up with accessories and bedding?

Is it a rental unit that needs to have pieces added to maximize rental revenue?

Do we need to open up a floor plan to make the home flow easier?

Are we repainting, new floors, tile, etc…

Project Scope Defines Budget

Being a Big Sky Interior Designer, I am usually dealing with 2nd homes for absentee owners. That means I get involved and help watch over a number of different facets, as you can see from above. Furnishing is just one of many things I do here in Big Sky as an Interior Designer. A third of the time, the Interior Design project involves some construction facet along with furnishing the home. That means hours spent picking finishes, paint colors, floors, tile and talking with the construction crews on schedules, order of installation and just getting the job done right. This seems to be the most overwhelming part to homeowners. This is where it is nice to have professional help in picking complimentary finishes and colors. If you are someone that enjoys being more involved in the choices of finishes, paint colors and tiles, it is nice to have someone to bounce ideas or confirm choices.

Once the construction ends, the furnishing begins. I will have done a great deal of background work so we will have furnishings moving in as the construction crews go out. So when someone wants to talk budget sizes it can be a very wide variance of numbers. We have done simple bedding projects for as little as $3000 and have done construction oversight, interior design and furnishing for as much as $500,000. A wide variance but when you consider that we have a number of factors that me might get involved in or it might be a very simple interior decorating job where we are just freshening up a house it begins to make sense. You have to be versatile to be a Big Sky Interior Designer. Big Sky has older developments that are being freshened up and new developments like, Moonlight, Spanish Peaks or Yellowstone Club where new homes are being built.

The best way to get a budget is for you to have a general idea of what you are wanting to do with your home. We can give you a rough ballpark figure over the phone. We are all about maximizing value and how you interior decorate your home in Big Sky will have an impact on what you get in return both as a rental or if you eventually want to sell it after you enjoy it. That means we might give you two ranges or suggest a few pieces where you will not want to skimp. What we have found over the years is those clients that are so tightly budget minded might short change themselves on maximizing value of their home due to a few thousand dollars. I respect that decision, just feel we are not doing our job if we don’t give options that potentially maximize your asset.

Interior design budgets depend on the scope of the work, what you have in mind for a home and how far along you are with the vision of what you want your home to look like. It also depends on what step of the process we are brought in. Many times we can save you significant dollars if we are early enough in the process to help conceptualize furniture and make suggestions on finishes. Being a Montana Interior Design Firm we know what finishes, furniture and accessories are readily available here in Montana. That can be a big advantage in our little town of Big Sky!

I hope you have found this helpful. There are so many factors in Big Sky, MT that can affect your budget for Interior Design and Construction. Time of the year, difficulty of getting product to sight, availability of labor, etc…If you have a project coming up that you are going to need a Montana Interior Design Firm that actually is in Big Sky please contact us. We would love to help and if you want to see some of our projects you can visit our Portfolio pages or you can visit us on Houzz, Pinterest or Facebook. Big Sky, MT Interior Design Redo

Sometimes we get real excited and go out and do something out of the norm! This is our 2nd home that we have purchased out of foreclosure to redo. We look for a home that has good bones that is outdated and maybe been neglected the last few years. Then we get after the Interior Design part of it! We knock out walls to open the floor plan, widen doors, give it new flooring and carpeting. New architectural accents with porch downstairs, shutters and window seat in master. Then finish it with new paint, new lighting, new front deck and new landscaping. It turned out very nice and has had rave reviews from Realtors in Big Sky. This home is in the Aspengrove neighborhood of Big Sky, MT. From an interior design standpoint this is the type neighborhood that we think anyone would love to live in. Quiet, wildlife, off the beaten path but still has great access to the mountain and town. The house is set off from the road a good distance, set in it’s own forest of pine trees with good views. You will see moose, elk, deer and maybe a bear or two. The goal as an Interior Designer was to have the house fit in to the natural surroundings of Big Sky. It needed to accent what was already put there by Mother Nature. All the feedback is that we did a good job in doing that on this Big Sky, MT redo! Please feel free to contact us if you have a home in Big Sky, MT that needs a loving touch!

Fly Fishing the Madison River

Quite a few people head through Big Sky for fly fishing vacations. You have quite a few choices of blue ribbon streams to choose from but I thought I would talk about the Madison River on this post. The Madison River is known for larger fish than the Gallatin and from Big Sky you have two choices of where to go fish the Madison(Maddy).

If you want a calm float you head north towards Bozeman and then take a left at 4Corners(Main & 191). Stay on that road and you run into the Maddy in about 30 minutes. This is called the Lower Maddy and is good for early season, winter fishing and beginning drift boaters. It is about a 7 mile float from Warm Springs to Black’s Ford. Where you run into the river is Black’s Ford. Just keep following the road upstream for 7 miles and you can’t miss Warm Springs. A calm river here, it is much more forgiving for a beginner’s float. You can still screw up but if you have rowed a canoe and pay attention it is the perfect classroom. Why early season and winter? Because this is float tube central during the summer and the temperature’s get high enough that fish are sluggish and get stressed easily. The float tubing is fun and can be anyone from college kids to families floating down the river. Pretty shallow and you can stand up in most places so it is nice for families. We float it while one person drives the RV to one of the pullouts and you can get out eat, relax and then continue on down the river. It is a 2-3 hour float or drift. If you are drift boating it is a good idea to stop and wade fish a nice pool.

The upper Maddy is a different river. You would drive south from Big Sky and turn right on 287 near Hebgen Lake. Continue past Quake Lake and you are quickly at the Upper Maddy. From Big Sky it is about 1.5 hours to the start. You can fish all the way into Ennis. The river has boulders and is a bigger river and opportunities for big fish. Not made for your first drift boat trip you have ever taken but once you know how to handle a drift boat it would be wise to take someone that has done it before and give it a try. Boats are turned over in this part of the Maddy and most all of us are going to bounce off at least one boulder on the float. Not trying to scare anyone just want everyone to be safe. You can wade in numerous spots. I would carry a wading stick to steady yourself. Three dollar bridge is a famous place to wade from. There are numerous public put ins and there are numerous opinions on which is the best float. You will most likely see several low bridges(rods down), buffalo jumps and a few bald eagles. I love to float this part during late summer, early fall when the hopper hatch is going on. Always, fish with a buddy and stay within eyesight of each other.

I would always talk to local fly shops and if you haven’t fly fished much I would highly recommend getting a guide for a day. Doesn’t guarantee you will catch fish but it certainly increases the odds and you will learn a lot.

One last very important thing! If you have a child that would like to catch a trout, take him/her over to Ennis and get some worms and a bobber at the grocery store and go to the pond. Fun will ensue! Click on the pic of my daughter to see the size fish you can catch. Just make sure and put them back so another child can have the same amount of fun!

Until next time, I hope you get a chance to enjoy Big Sky and if you need an Interior Decorator please let us know.

Thanks,

As a Big Sky Interior Designer, where do you purchase furniture, rugs and accessories?

I am a professional shopper. I have been all my professional career. From Word Records where I had to source creative and cutting edge marketing ideas and products to The Odee Company where I sourced products for customers from all over the world to Tatom Design, my reason for being put on this earth is to shop! To find the best product at the best price is one of my biggest thrills! It was easier when I decorated homes in Dallas, of course. I had thousands of options to shop. Becoming a Big Sky Interior Designer and has helped me continue to find unique sourcing avenues for what I need to furnish my clients homes. After a whole career of shopping for clients, developing skills in negotiations and having numerous sources for any one product I am able to give great value to my clients.

I use any avenue to source furnishings for clients. I use the internet, travel to Bozeman and Billings, attend auctions, go to Market in Dallas and Las Vegas take trips to Santa Fe and Denver and use my Dallas connections to make sure that clients have the best possible trends and fashions to furnish their mountain homes. I have contacts with reps all over the country from the East Coast to the West Coast to make sure I have numerous options to show clients. My contacts source rugs, furniture, lighting, accessories, fixtures, etc…It is a busy life but I enjoy it! My husband thinks I’m a little crazy but what does he know!

My shopping allows me to have numerous options and angles on how to furnish homes from high end luxury homes, to rustic ski homes, to quaint cabins. I can be hanging moose heads and old ship lap to overseeing installation of the finest marble or granite countertops in the same day.

I love being a Big Sky Interior Designer with all the varieties of Mountain Interior Design. Getting involved in different facets from construction to Interior Design to a Redesign or freshening up a Mountain Home keeps the creative juices flowing. Should you have a future or present project you would like to talk about, I would love a chance to discuss it with you and get the opportunity to get to know you. Please feel free to call or email!

What does Interior Design in Big Sky Encompass?

Sometimes we get asked what Interior Design services we help clients with on their homes here in Big Sky. The answer is in some ways all of the above. For most clients, this is their 2nd home. That means they may not be on site at all times during a build or redesign project. This can mean that we may be involved in the construction phase. We have many Builders and Architects in Big Sky that are incredibly capable artisans, that have great tastes and do a fantastic job. Clients sometimes feel that if we are going to be furnishing it that we should be involved at an early phase in picking finishes or the look. The weather can also affect interior design in Big Sky on how you furnish a home, colors, etc…Sometimes the homeowner may want help in a certain area of the home or may want a female opinion on paint colors, carpet, tile, etc… It gives them another eye to help make sure that the home fits together and has the right look and feel for the client.

Some clients bring us in to furnish the home after it is built. This starts with us having conversations and showing pictures and previous projects to get a feel for their tastes and likes. We then start showing furniture, accessories while shopping with them or send them pictures for them to approve. Furniture, etc.. starts getting delivered and we are able to show a room in the finished stage. There are always a few items we change out at that time but you start getting close to knowing what a clients likes and dislikes are. As more rooms are furnished you can start seeing the house take shape and the overall thought process of the interior design. This is the majority of what we do.

Some clients bring us in to redo a home either as a renovation construction wise or interior design wise. This can involve adding square footage, redoing a kitchen, bedroom or bathroom. Of course, this leads to picking tile, carpet, new paint, new finishes, appliances, moving or knocking out walls or any of a number of other things. It also usually involves new furniture and lighting, art and accessories. This can add substantial value to your home if done right. Some clients do this right before putting the house on the market with one of the great Realtors we have in Big Sky. Many times the Realtor gives solid ideas on what is the best way to increase the value of the home.

Since this is a big 2nd home rental market sometimes we are brought in by a Vacation Rental Management company or homeowner to help increase the amount of rental income a home can bring in. The Vacation Rental Management companies have great knowledge of how to increase rental income and what clients are looking for in a rental. For instance, if you can reconfigure a room to where the home can sleep more people that can open up more potential rental candidates. Couple that with the fact that if you have a very good Interior Design job and you have a real edge over other Big Sky properties. If your potential vacation renters are looking through the possibilities, sleeping more people in a good location in a well furnished house is a real advantage.

Finally, every once in a while we find a property that we will purchase ourselves and redo. Our factors we consider are location, undervalued home with great bones that just might need a little TLC. This involves a pretty intense 1-4 months for transforming a home into something that should sell for top dollar in the market. We have a surprise on one of our redos that we will be announcing in the upcoming months! So keep looking back for new and exciting news!

Getting Involved in People’s Holiday Season in Big Sky MT

Today was our first real snow day here in Big Sky. Our family was discussing and some are happy to see snow and some could wait a while longer! Halloween was just a few days ago and it can be anything from a super nice fall night to a complete blizzard!

My mind has turned to the Holidays:

  1. Being a Big Sky Interior Designer, I have to think several months ahead with clients. We have to have homes ready for Thanksgiving or Christmas family time! It is a great deal of fun trying to get client’s homes ready for the relaxing, fun times in Big Sky during those times! Very fulfilling!
  2. Our son Tate is coming home from his first semester at the Air Force Academy(YEAH!) and we are planning his flights. We can’t wait to see him and are super excited! He has been gone since June so it will be great to have him home!
  3. Christmas movies have started! Gets started earlier and earlier every year but as a family we have watched one every night since Halloween! Love this time of the year.

This is a time of year that is very busy for us. From getting homes ready for families, to turning houses over to rental companies and all the many details that entails. We decorate a few homes so when clients arrive they walk into a tree and a decorated house so they don’t waste a minute of their time during this precious time of the year in Big Sky. I love being an Interior Designer in Big Sky this time of the year and the rush of helping people’s dreams come true with furnishing their vacation homes. That special time of the year starts the first day of real snow! I wonder what Christmas movie is on TV tonight?

Let us know if we can help in any way on a present or future design job. We would love to help you make a dream come true!

Best wishes from Tatom Design and Big Sky MT and feel free to visit and or like us on Facebook-Tatom Design!

Fall Flyfishing in Big Sky Montana

Most of the crowds in Big Sky MT come once the snow starts falling but our beautiful town has a great deal to offer in other times of the year. The summer has become a very popular time as well for people to come hiking, mountain biking and then my personal favorite, fly fishing! We, like most people that, live up here have numerous people that want to come visit. Many of the men want to fly fish for Rainbow or Brown trout. Most want to come in June, July and August. What they don’t realize is that is not the best time to fish for trout. If you want to catch a bunch of big trout, Fall is the time to come. The later, the better. These pictures show a few trout out of a stupendous day with a friend catching a bunch of big trout. Fall is also the time for bugling elk and more sightings of all kinds of animals. The other reason to come is the reduced crowds. Oh wait, never mind. Forget you read this!

If you do ever come to Big Sky MT and decide to build your dream home and need a Big Sky MT Interior Decorator, let us know! We would love to help you! If you enjoyed this post you might also like Grizzly Bear In a Car!

July 4th

This has been a tough but joyful week! We dropped our son Tate Tatom off at the Air Force Academy last Thursday. As a parent dropping off their first child at College, we found this to be a bit more stressful. You say goodbye to them they walk through a door and you lose control of your child. You see them get on a bus with their “Cadre” yelling at them. You have no contact with them for the next 6 weeks besides letters.

It has been surreal and difficult. Tate will be going to school at one of the most challenging schools in the country, training militarily, and playing golf for the Air Force Academy. We get to see some pictures of him but have to search through hundreds of photos of all Basic Cadets for a glimpse of him. It looks like he is meeting every challenge of serving his country.

I ask that on July 4th we remember all the wonderful young men and women that put their lives behind serving their country. I had no idea the work and struggles they go through so the rest of us can live our lives!
