Finding Reasonably Priced Art for Big Sky, Mt Interior Design

Inspiration comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Being an Interior Designer in Big

Sky, MT I have to be versatile and fit all styles and budgets. Art becomes a very

interesting part of the budget. People want color, style and images that make a house

warm and inviting and show what they love and who they are. The problem is that close

to half the houses I interior decorate are used as vacation rental. This means that people

do not like to spend a great deal on high dollar art that could be subject to

traffic and potential wear.

This started my quest for finding good art at reasonable prices. My husband and I use to

own The Odee Company which is a printer and promotional product company in Dallas,

Tx. We sold to two long time employees and a friend. They have been very successful

and one of the areas they expanded into was wide format printing. One thing led to

another and they partnered with two artists and launched Canvaskick.com. Wide format

has become very accepted for art and Canvaskick does giclees that the artist can hand

sign. The giclee can have a resin finish added that makes it appear to be encased in

glass. Cost is around $650 for the giclee and the resin finish is extra. The originals go

for $6000 and up. So, this is an inexpensive way to have great color and art.

Canvaskick started with Carolyn Joe and Dara Burriss and have added Matt Jones

Photography(great trout pictures), Dustin Doskocil Photography, Felix Art Studios and

Walter Eduardo Soza. There supposedly are more artists and works from present artists

to soon be added. It has developed enough of a following that it has been featured on

Cassie Freeman’s,  Hi Sugarplum webpage  and has participated in her

One Room Challenge. I heard Cassie was in Big Sky for her sister’s wedding. I would

have loved to shown her some of my projects and some Dallas hospitality! Maybe next

time! My husband could have shown her some beautiful property on a pretty river!

I have used Canvaskick and Odee for both the giclees, as well as, other prints. They

turn them quickly. As an Interior Designer, we know everything happens yesterday.

Being a Big Sky Interior Designer with people wanting 2nd homes perfect for family and

friends really means yesterday. Canvaskick says two weeks to turn the art but I

would urge you to call. They have turned things for me in a crunch in very short order

and are great to work with, so always call Travis. I also would like to add, their shipping

is bulletproof. They ship nationwide. So, they custom build the box and the art is bubble

wrapped extremely well.

Next time you have a project that needs some reasonable art options consider wide

format and look up Canvaskick. Great way to add color and style!

What Styles of Interior Decorating do you do?

This question is one that potential clients seem to be concerned about. They might have a certain style they like and are worried about that style differing from an Interior Decorators likes or personal tastes. Living in Big Sky, MT everyone thinks the traditional rustic mountain home is what everyone gets here from Interior Decorators. I can only speak for myself but I enjoy different styles and learning the tastes of clients and creating a home that fits their tastes within a timeframe and budget! I have done rustic, cabin, modern rustic, modern, lodges and chalet. I enjoy each style and it is more about creating something for a client that they love than what style might be my favorite.  I, also, have seen styles change over time. Styles that use to be popular and in have changed over the last few years. Big Sky MT was actually started in the 70‘s and over the years you see a number of styles being built so I have to be adaptable and be able to fit the style to the house and the client.

It starts with learning your tastes. We can do that with sharing pictures. I do this through personal pictures, magazines, Pinterest or Houzz pages. You also get to view our Portfolio page to give feedback on what you like and don’t like. Through this process we learn each other’s likes and personalities and start building a team to create the home you want and love. I then start sending you pictures and discussing budget and scope of project. We might tackle the whole project at once or choose to do it in stages. With it being Big Sky MT many times we have to work around rentals, holidays and special family time. This is something we do everyday and are accustomed to being flexible to your needs and uses of your Mountain Home! The pictures and feedback you give are very important in developing the plan for your home. Colors, textures, grains, finishes are all things that we are looking for feedback on. As a Big Sky MT Interior Decorator, you have to be adaptable to numerous styles and put the customers tastes first. It is something I enjoy doing everyday while living in the beautiful place that we call Big Sky!

If you have an Interior Design project you have coming up please feel free to give us a call or email to discuss no matter what stage you are at! Also, feel free to look at any of our pages above to help you see some of our recent projects!

Big Sky MT Interior Designer – My Tastes vs Your Tastes – You Win!

My Interior Design Tastes vs Your Interior Design Tastes-You Win! – Big Sky MT Interior Designer

I’m going to start writing blog posts on some of the most common questions clients ask before hiring an Interior Designer. These are questions that come up across the board no matter the size of house, budget, style, location, etc…Let’s take Big Sky, MT where I live and do Interior Design, as an example. Big Sky is a ski resort with a wide variance of developments. You can have very large homes in super high end developments such as: Spanish Peaks, Yellowstone Club and Moonlight Basin. Then, on the other end, we have more modest homes in the meadow and mountains surrounding Big Sky. Big Sky Resort was started in the early 70’s, so you are looking at many homes and developments that are 30+ years old. So, you have many homes that need updating to maximize their Big Sky, MT Real Estate values. If you are going to be successful as a Big Sky MT Interior Designer, you have to be adaptable. You better be able to do Rustic, Rustic Modern, Ski Chalet, Cabin look, Modern, European, Lodge and whatever else clients want. It is enjoyable to decorate in different styles and keeps me excited and energized!

Which gets me to the title of this post. When I decorate am I decorating for my tastes or yours? First of all, I am not decorating for my portfolio or to please myself. I please the client first and get my satisfaction out of bringing their tastes together to make a home they can love and enjoy. So how do I learn your tastes? There are a number of ways! We do a lot of talking! The more, the better! This is easy for me because I love to talk and make new friends! We use to show pictures out of magazines to find someone’s Interior Decorating likes and styles. I still have piles of them! Now, I can send you to my Pinterest, Houzz, or Webpage. You pin or like my ideas or share your ideas. We can even have a private page that just you and me and maybe a friend that knows your tastes can visit and make notes and comments. This leads to a discussion where we start to get to know each other(remember friends). If you are in Big Sky, we go see houses I have decorated and go shopping together for an afternoon. When the buying starts I send pictures at first asking for feedback. Do you like this? What do you think of this? I have done over 100 projects between Montana and Texas so the system works. Most, all the items I purchase are returnable and we usually will return a couple of things that don’t fit your idea of the house.

This whole process is to try and get inside your head a bit from a Big Sky MT Interior Designer standpoint. A good Interior Designer picks up on the little things and comments you make such as: Love this, To die For, I’d Marry That, Gotta have that, Yes, and all the other funny things I’ve heard through the years. This process is all about us having fun while turning your Big Sky, MT home into something you love!

Feel free to visit my Houzz, Pinterest or Facebook page or look at our Portfolio section to see some of the recent projects we have had the honor of doing! If you have a need for a Big Sky MT Interior Designer and have a project please feel free to call or email me. It’s easy, I live in this beautiful place! Contact me.

Getting Involved in People’s Holiday Season in Big Sky MT

Today was our first real snow day here in Big Sky. Our family was discussing and some are happy to see snow and some could wait a while longer! Halloween was just a few days ago and it can be anything from a super nice fall night to a complete blizzard!

My mind has turned to the Holidays:

  1. Being a Big Sky Interior Designer, I have to think several months ahead with clients. We have to have homes ready for Thanksgiving or Christmas family time! It is a great deal of fun trying to get client’s homes ready for the relaxing, fun times in Big Sky during those times! Very fulfilling!
  2. Our son Tate is coming home from his first semester at the Air Force Academy(YEAH!) and we are planning his flights. We can’t wait to see him and are super excited! He has been gone since June so it will be great to have him home!
  3. Christmas movies have started! Gets started earlier and earlier every year but as a family we have watched one every night since Halloween! Love this time of the year.

This is a time of year that is very busy for us. From getting homes ready for families, to turning houses over to rental companies and all the many details that entails. We decorate a few homes so when clients arrive they walk into a tree and a decorated house so they don’t waste a minute of their time during this precious time of the year in Big Sky. I love being an Interior Designer in Big Sky this time of the year and the rush of helping people’s dreams come true with furnishing their vacation homes. That special time of the year starts the first day of real snow! I wonder what Christmas movie is on TV tonight?

Let us know if we can help in any way on a present or future design job. We would love to help you make a dream come true!

Best wishes from Tatom Design and Big Sky MT and feel free to visit and or like us on Facebook-Tatom Design!

Can your Interior Designer help you make Money on Redoing a House?

Can you increase the value of a home by freshening, redesigning or changing the Interior Design before putting it on the market? As an Interior Designer in Big Sky we can only speak about SW Montana and from previous experience in Dallas, Tx but we definitely have seen it pay off time and again.

Let me ask you this. If you go into a home that has tastes that are several decades old versus a home that is up to date and furnished well, which are you going to drive a harder bargain for. One appeals to you and the other you know you will need to spend money to get it to the level you want. I know there are many factors that affect this decision such as location, needs, etc…but all things being equal putting a house on the market that is updated and shows well brings more money and sells it sooner than the other end of the spectrum. Over the last 18 months we have been asked by several realtors in Big Sky to freshen up a house that has been on the market for a while. Every time the Big Sky house sold quickly after putting it back on the market with the sell price being fairly close to the listing price. Coincidence? We don’t believe so! A redesign of at least part of the house gives buyers a vision and reduces some unknowns that affect home value. You certainly have to spend your money wisely but doing one or two rooms can change how buyers view the home.

The biggest rooms to consider are kitchen, den, master and master bathroom. Is it foolproof? No, but our experience is if you have two homes of comparable size and locale and one shows good taste in design and one does not it becomes easier for most buyers to trust what they see versus what they may not be able to picture.

Many times adding one accent or changing a few things that are out of date gives you an advantage over the rest of the competition in the market. At Tatom Design, we aren’t Realtors. They are the experts. We can only go by what we are being asked to do and what we have seen happen after helping a home become more desirable.

If you have a home in Big Sky or are looking at purchasing one and looking for Interior Design help, please feel free to email or call us to discuss your project! We would love to help! Also, please visit our Facebook page and give us a Like if you like what you see. You can also follow us on Twitter under @TatomDesign!
