Sometimes we get real excited and go out and do something out of the norm! This is our 2nd home that we have purchased out of foreclosure to redo. We look for a home that has good bones that is outdated and maybe been neglected the last few years. Then we get after the Interior Design part of it! We knock out walls to open the floor plan, widen doors, give it new flooring and carpeting. New architectural accents with porch downstairs, shutters and window seat in master. Then finish it with new paint, new lighting, new front deck and new landscaping. It turned out very nice and has had rave reviews from Realtors in Big Sky. This home is in the Aspengrove neighborhood of Big Sky, MT. From an interior design standpoint this is the type neighborhood that we think anyone would love to live in. Quiet, wildlife, off the beaten path but still has great access to the mountain and town. The house is set off from the road a good distance, set in it’s own forest of pine trees with good views. You will see moose, elk, deer and maybe a bear or two. The goal as an Interior Designer was to have the house fit in to the natural surroundings of Big Sky. It needed to accent what was already put there by Mother Nature. All the feedback is that we did a good job in doing that on this Big Sky, MT redo! Please feel free to contact us if you have a home in Big Sky, MT that needs a loving touch!
Here is a project we did on the slopes of Big Sky Resort. Interior Decorating in Big Sky MT allows me to look at some of the most incredible views while working on client’s homes. Sometimes when you are interior decorating in Big Sky space becomes one of the most important considerations. This is a cozy cabin built right on the slopes of Big Sky, MT. A small two bedroom cabin that needed to maximize space while bringing in color and giving an inviting place to enjoy after a day on the slopes. The interior decorating included new carpet, rug, antler accents and bringing in bright reds and comfy leather sofa and chairs. This Big Sky ski cabin is all about skiing, rustic log accents and showing off the wildlife of our beautiful area. This kind of interior decorating can vastly improve the amount of return a home can get from vacation rentals. It creates a place to enjoy at the end of the day!

This is one of those topics that comes up being an Interior Decorator Big Sky MT. Whether it is a new build or a remodel this can be one of the most discussed and debated parts of the kitchen or bathroom decors and can definitely affect the overall budget. What kind of material, cost, color, seams all enter into the discussion. There are several things that I have found as an Interior Decorator that can help keep costs as reasonable as possible. First of all being in Big Sky, Montana you have less vendors to choose from. We just don’t live in a big town. All Interior Decorators in Big Sky MT are going to go to Bozeman. Our choice of suppliers has greatly improved over the years I have been doing this but our population still is very small compared to larger cities so, of course, we have less choices. Not bad choices just less choices.
Here are the things I have learned being an Interior Decorator Big Sky MT:
-On granite ask about remnants and extra large slabs. This can even be true on other materials. Many times companies have left over product from a project that might work well for a bath room countertop or a smaller kitchen countertop. On the larger slabs if you have a large area some times you can keep from going to a 2nd slab. Slabs are broken sometimes on larger slabs and can be cut to fit smaller projects. You have to be open to doing this but if your counter is cut from a larger remnant or larger broken piece and it doesn’t affect any part of the look of your counter, it is worth considering for some of my clients. Savings can be 30-50% under the right situation and it becomes a win-win for everyone.
-Get multiple quotes from different suppliers. Each has different product and materials so prices are going to vary. It also introduces you to more salesman. Salesman can be the key if you build a rapport with them quickly. They might know of a sale coming up, a remnant, excess inventory or a slab they are trying to move for whatever reason. Sometimes, they are also given margin room that they can give you a % off the listed price. A good friendly relationship can get you quantity discounts as well. If you go have discussions with several salesman in town and have them all working for you many times you will get a call on a special deal. I may have an advantage in being and Interior Decorator Big Sky MT and they know that but having a good relationship with several salesman someone is going to offer you a good deal. Everyone likes working with someone they like and I am a big believer that is how you can drive your best bargain.
-Keep an open mind. Sometimes there might be a slab that is excess inventory or has not sold for whatever reason. Maybe the slab has been there for a while or they ordered too much of the same lot run. Maybe the slab is thinner than a normal slab. The normal slab is 3″ thick but the trend to save money is going to 2″ on counters besides the kitchen. You might need to consider paint color changes in a room and if you had a paint color you were deciding between and you can get a great deal on a counter top that you might have to go with your 2nd choice paint, it might be considering. As an Interior Decorator in Big Sky MT sometimes things get expensive and if we had a close second on paint choice and we can save good money, I need to present you that choice for you to make.
-Be a friend to everyone at the yard. You will be surprised what someone will tell you if you are nice, ask an opinion and listen. People in the back know a lot about the product. They might be an installer, do the cutting or move product and they might be able to tell you to check on this product or give you a heads up on a product they would steer away from. Granite shops are known to have varied opinions that they will share with you while the salesman runs and gets a call or talks to someone else. You are an information gatherer from anyone that is willing to share information. When you go from one place to another share the information you gathered and then see what the opinions of more experts want to share with you.
-Edges and finishes cost money. It is a simple fact that if something has to be done to your slab for your liking it is going to cost money 99 times out of 100. If you want a Beveled, Cove, Dupont or Ogee edge compared to the edge that comes from the mill you should expect to pay extra. These are all edges that time will be spent on very expensive machines to give you the desired edge contour that you want and you will be billed a very healthy rate to get the custom edges. The same thing goes for finishes. If you want a leathered finish, a certain sheen or shine that is not from the mill you are going back on a machine to get the desired effect. That machine and person that runs it doesn’t work for free. The only exception is getting lucky with a remnant which I have done a number of times. In fact, as a Interior Decorator Big Sky MT, I have people that will call me when such pieces come up. It works incredibly well if you have the right project.
-Find a handyman to do the demo of pulling old counters off, sheetrock if necessary, disposing of the trash. You can save money by doing that with a handyman. Make sure they understand the specs and what is being done. That is a big part of my job as an Interior Decorator Big Sky MT is putting the right people together and making sure they understand what the other sub needs. Most countertop people in Bozeman don’t even do both but in the few cases I know of, you can potentially save hundreds of dollars.
-Find a handyman to do the plumbing of putting a sink in. There are a number of types of sinks and ways to put them in with countertops. Some countertop companies do light plumbing but many times a good handyman can save you hundreds here as well.
-Use other less expensive materials to break up the size you need of more expensive materials. We like to use butcher block, concrete and any other complimentary products on wings of a slab to cut down on the square footage for say high end granite. For instance, many times it adds to a kitchen to have some butcher block. If it saves money, as well, that makes it all the better.

I call Big Sky, MT home. I love it! I am an Interior Designer and get the opportunity to work on some of the most beautiful homes in the country but the things I see and the people I meet are some of the most enjoyable experiences of my life. I decided to share some of these experiences with you by doing a Interior Design Blog Montana theme. It is not all about interior design. I try and share some of the pics of what we get to see everyday. Both in scenery and wildlife! This is a picture that I took one evening when the clouds moved in as the sun was going down. You will find grizzly bear pictures, elk and fly fishing pictures also in the blog. After all, what is a Interior Design Blog Montana theme without some beautiful wildlife and scenery mixed in!
Our Big Sky, MT is in a unique part of the country. Located 45 minutes north of the NW entrance to Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky is the largest ski acreage in North America. Bet you didn’t know that! Our lift lines are non existent. Christmas time you might have to wait 5 minutes. Big Sky has grown dramatically in the last 15 years but is still a very small town most of the time of the year.
Big Sky is blanketed in snow 6 months out of the year and sometimes longer. Today’s date is March 25th and we have had 14″ of snow in the last 72 hours. It is beautiful, although, at this point we are ready to start seeing some flowers and we are still 2 months out before we start seeing them. The beauty of this time of the year is very soon it will be muddy and yucky with the town deserted but the wildlife and fishing opportunities become tremendous over the next month. See here for my last years early trip into Yellowstone in April. April and early May are your big opportunities to see Grizzlies and controversial Wolves in the Park. You have to deal with very few people and you will find the Park Rangers much more relaxed this time of year. You will also have the opportunity to see Bison calves. They are very cute just be careful about Mama! The fly fishing opportunities also abound this time of year before runoff. Trout are starting to get more active and it is the Rainbows turn to spawn in the spring, while the Browns get to follow and nibble on eggs. You have better opportunities for bigger and more plentiful fish this time of year than you do when there are almost as many fisherman as fish during the summer!
Of course with an Interior Design Blog Montana theme we will also talk about Interior Design and what is happening in Big Sky and Montana in general. We will show you some of our interior design projects and some of our remodels and new construction. Bottomline you never know what we will talk about or too in our Interior Design Blog Montana!
So, while most of you are starting to see spring flowers we are still blanketed in the white stuff but don’t feel sorry for us because this is a special time of the year to be in Big Sky, MT believe it or not. If you are curious about our other posts please check out our Blog and if you want to see some of our latest projects take a look at our Portfolio. If you are trying to decide between a 2nd home in Big Sky or want to get away from the crowds and purchase a Ranch or Farm in Montana, let us know. We would highly recommend Venture West Ranches in Bozeman as a farm and ranch real estate broker. They specialize in Legacy Ranches. We know there are decisions to be made when investing and both a 2nd home in Big Sky or a Farm or Ranch in Montana both have great opportunities for appreciation with the growth we are seeing.
I thought you might like to see what Interior Design Blogs I like to read. Creative people need to keep their juices flowing which means looking for ideas. I want to see what people are doing in other parts of the country and the latest trends. This almost always gives you an idea or a new resource that can make a home and save clients money!
Here in no particular order are my Favorite Interior Design Blogs:
Mountain Living Blog This is, of course, closer to what I do everyday style wise. It shows quite a few Colorado Ski Resorts but every once in a while Big Sky Montana gets to jump in there! I find it very interesting for the Interior Decorating part but it also shows Real Estate values quite a bit. Big Sky Montana is still very undervalued while giving you more of everything Colorado has to offer. Yes, I’m biased.
Joanna’s Blog Joanna Gaines of Chip and Joanna fame. You can take a girl out of Texas but you can’t take the Texas out of the girl! I was born and raised in Texas and graduated from Texas A&M so you know I have to love these two. Joanna is incredibly talented and does a very good job of doing great Interior Decorating while watching over her clients money.
Good Bones Great Pieces These two ladies are both authors and Interior Designers. So you get several perspectives as well as getting to go shopping with them. They also share resources so sometimes you pick up a source you might not have known about.
Montana Prairie Tales This blog is small town Montana. Joellyn lived in the big city and escaped like my husband(Buzz)and I did. Her interior design jobs are smaller because of being in rural Montana but she is talented.
Now you have a few blogs to go read if you love interior design blogs and are looking for some ideas and of course don’t forget we are always adding content to our blog! You can also check us out on Pinterest, Houzz and Facebook. If you want to see some of our recent projects check out our Portfolio page and, of course, if you want to discuss an upcoming project please Contact us!
Another question that I receive is, how far out time wise are you? This seems to be a concern for many potential clients and I understand with projects coming in all scopes, sizes and timelines. The busiest season for Interior Design Company in Montana is usually around Christmas time but summer is quickly becoming a busy time as well.
First, let me give you a bit of background. My husband and I owned a Graphics and Marketing company in Dallas, Tx for 24 years. Our business was about meeting deadlines and delivering product built around very large campaigns. When I started doing Interior Design in Dallas and then Big Sky Montana deadlines were second nature. I have been able to decorate clients homes quickly under deadlines of rentals, family and Holidays. I started in Big Sky doing Interior Decorating on Rentals to help companies and their clients maximize their rental income. That means I had to decorate between rentals or rental seasons. You have to be ready to roll and get the job done before the next rental. Being able to do the Interior Design of a home quickly and make it look good has helped grow my business very quickly.
I have suppliers that are use to the quick turn of getting a home ready. Big pieces are ordered and ready to ship. Construction if needed has been planned and scheduled and accessories arrive so when the green light is given my team will work 7 days a week to make it all happen for the client. Much of timing depends on the scope of the project. If it involves me doing Construction Consulting that is controlled by the Builder but there are a number of great builders here in Big Sky. What I focus on with them is being readily available when decisions need to be made. It, also, allows me to keep up with the vision of the Interior Decorating and showing the client pictures, picking fabric, ordering and insuring things are lined up to finish the project once the construction ends.
If the project is just Interior Decorating or even bedding, that can happen pretty quickly once we establish clients likes and dislikes. If we have custom pieces that is where time can slow down. Many Interior Design Companies in Montana are not flexible enough to be able to go with already pre made pieces or accessories to make a tight deadline. I love doing custom pieces but I am flexible enough to have stock furniture and accessories that can be shipped and ready for a tight deadline. I had to learn to be flexible in my previous career and my training has paid off for many of my clients in Interior Design here in Montana! For example, I just finished a clients home here in Montana and they were pleased with the end product and timing so much that they flew me to the East Coast to finish the accessories in their main home. It was a 2 day whirl wind but we pulled it off and it looks great!
So if you have a project in Montana and especially in Big Sky Montana and are looking for an Interior Design Company in Montana please Contact us. I would also encourage you to check out our Portfolio page. We are also very active on Social Media and you can see our idea pages on Pinterest, Houzz and Facebook.
I feel the best way to keep up with new and exciting Interior Decorating ideas is watching shows, talking to people, reading and going to shows. Here are a few videos with my thoughts after each one. The beauty about an Interior Designer is that none of us are going to agree with each other 100% of the time! I know Big Sky MT Interior Decorating styles and others outside the area don’t know what the trends are in our Montana mountain town. What styles are bringing top dollar and what skilled labor and the harsh weather can do to some of these trends! Here is our first video: Top 10 Design Trends Of 2016
My thoughts are:
#10-I love the hard lines for the right place and design. I would limit it to some of the statement pieces. You just need to be careful and not overdue. New concepts can be fun and exciting. They just need to fit!
#9-Retro is in and we have used it on several Interior Decorating Big Sky MT projects. We are using it a lot between art and furnishings! We love games such as Foosball or Old Pinball Machines and we mixing in Big Sectional Sofas.
#8-Natural Fibers are a big part of what we do here in Big Sky. Seagrass or Jute rugs. Artwork or furniture using reclaimed wood. Exteriors and finishes using stone and wood finishes. The new and exciting things for 2016 are mixing in color on there natural fiber pieces. I am very excited about doing this in 2016!
#6-Love space savers and things that help in organization!
#5-Simple is in! It is me with accents! You come to Big Sky to get away from your busy life and you need a Big Sky Interior Decorator that understands that and gives you a soothing home!
#4-Love glass in the kitchen! Let your dishes be art!
#3-Again you come to Big Sky MT to relax. Pretty and practical helps soothe you!
#1-Maybe. This would work in some of our Interior Decorating Big Sky MT styles but not all! Love the design just would depend on the project. With a number of Modern Interior Decorating projects coming up for us in 2016 you will definitely see us use this design idea!
Next on the video is: Tiny Cabins in the Woods by Grig Stamate. I think this is very appropriate for Interior Decorating Big Sky MT ideas because a number of homes have or are considering guest cabins or cottages.
Home sizes are trending smaller and this gives you some good ideas on weekend cabins in the woods. These, of course, are perfect guest cabins for larger homes. My thoughts on making these small cabins bigger or living bigger are having lofts, bunk beds, porches, natural wood burning stoves, and I love the flower boxes! I would try and always use as much reclaimed materials in the project and I love how some of these small cabins are using bright colors for trim! I want to give full credit to Grig’s blog: howtobuildahouseblog.com
So those are 2 videos I thought you might find interesting and hopefully entertaining! If you want to see some Big Sky MT Interior Decorating of small cabins try here or you can view some of our recent projects here! This question is one that potential clients seem to be concerned about. They might have a certain style they like and are worried about that style differing from an Interior Decorators likes or personal tastes. Living in Big Sky, MT everyone thinks the traditional rustic mountain home is what everyone gets here from Interior Decorators. I can only speak for myself but I enjoy different styles and learning the tastes of clients and creating a home that fits their tastes within a timeframe and budget! I have done rustic, cabin, modern rustic, modern, lodges and chalet. I enjoy each style and it is more about creating something for a client that they love than what style might be my favorite. I, also, have seen styles change over time. Styles that use to be popular and in have changed over the last few years. Big Sky MT was actually started in the 70‘s and over the years you see a number of styles being built so I have to be adaptable and be able to fit the style to the house and the client.
It starts with learning your tastes. We can do that with sharing pictures. I do this through personal pictures, magazines, Pinterest or Houzz pages. You also get to view our Portfolio page to give feedback on what you like and don’t like. Through this process we learn each other’s likes and personalities and start building a team to create the home you want and love. I then start sending you pictures and discussing budget and scope of project. We might tackle the whole project at once or choose to do it in stages. With it being Big Sky MT many times we have to work around rentals, holidays and special family time. This is something we do everyday and are accustomed to being flexible to your needs and uses of your Mountain Home! The pictures and feedback you give are very important in developing the plan for your home. Colors, textures, grains, finishes are all things that we are looking for feedback on. As a Big Sky MT Interior Decorator, you have to be adaptable to numerous styles and put the customers tastes first. It is something I enjoy doing everyday while living in the beautiful place that we call Big Sky!
If you have an Interior Design project you have coming up please feel free to give us a call or email to discuss no matter what stage you are at! Also, feel free to look at any of our pages above to help you see some of our recent projects!
Can I Use Furniture I Already Have?
I have many questions that come up repeatedly when talking to prospective clients about doing the Interior decorating for their Big Sky, MT home. The question of whether I can use furniture or art in the house or brought from the client’s home. My job is not to spend your money to fulfill my dreams or to put the project into my portfolio. There are numerous projects where I have done the interior decorating here in Big Sky, MT and used pieces that are already in the home. As long as the piece looks good I love saving money for everyone involved. In fact, you will learn there is nothing that pleases me like a good deal!!! You might have a couch, dining room table or any of a number of pieces that might fit in the design. Maybe we stay with the dining room table and get new updated chairs or vice versa. Big Sky, MT can be an expensive place for a second home and sometimes budgets can get a little tight after paying for the home. So we look at the overall theme and if we can use present pieces or pieces from home and still have a professional looking interior decorated home, we do it! You don’t have to tell your friends that if you don’t want to. Mums the word from me and I feel like that is part of my talent! I think it is very important for me to note, I am interested in you being pleased both in the looks and what everything costs.
How we do this is after deciding the theme, we see what fits. Ideally, you don’t want the existing furniture to drive the decor. We have done it that way and it has worked for the most part but that is not the ideal situation. You don’t want to force the interior decorating in your mountain home in Big Sky. It should fit. If it doesn’t fit, I have connections where I can sell your furniture to offset budget costs if you would like. So you can send me photos of pieces and we make mutual decisions on whether something might work. What you will find is I like deals and spend your money like it is my own. Very carefully!
Should you have an Interior Design project coming up in Big Sky Montana please feel free to get in touch with us so we can discuss your Big Sky, MT dream home. You can also check us out on Houzz or Pinterest to see some of our collection of projects or ideas that we will use to help determine your tastes and likes. You can also find us on Facebook or check out our Portfolio page. I love Interior Decorating in Big Sky, MT! One of the most beautiful places in the world!
Montana Interior Design Firm – What Size Budgets Do You Work With?
This will be one of the first questions my future interior design clients will ask me. Big Sky, MT can be an expensive place but doesn’t always have to be. Budgets, first of all, depend on the scope of the design project. A Montana Interior Design Firm can save you money just from being local.
Are we talking about a home that someone purchased furnished that you just need to spruce up with accessories and bedding?
Is it a rental unit that needs to have pieces added to maximize rental revenue?
Do we need to open up a floor plan to make the home flow easier?
Are we repainting, new floors, tile, etc…
Project Scope Defines Budget
Being a Big Sky Interior Designer, I am usually dealing with 2nd homes for absentee owners. That means I get involved and help watch over a number of different facets, as you can see from above. Furnishing is just one of many things I do here in Big Sky as an Interior Designer. A third of the time, the Interior Design project involves some construction facet along with furnishing the home. That means hours spent picking finishes, paint colors, floors, tile and talking with the construction crews on schedules, order of installation and just getting the job done right. This seems to be the most overwhelming part to homeowners. This is where it is nice to have professional help in picking complimentary finishes and colors. If you are someone that enjoys being more involved in the choices of finishes, paint colors and tiles, it is nice to have someone to bounce ideas or confirm choices.
Once the construction ends, the furnishing begins. I will have done a great deal of background work so we will have furnishings moving in as the construction crews go out. So when someone wants to talk budget sizes it can be a very wide variance of numbers. We have done simple bedding projects for as little as $3000 and have done construction oversight, interior design and furnishing for as much as $500,000. A wide variance but when you consider that we have a number of factors that me might get involved in or it might be a very simple interior decorating job where we are just freshening up a house it begins to make sense. You have to be versatile to be a Big Sky Interior Designer. Big Sky has older developments that are being freshened up and new developments like, Moonlight, Spanish Peaks or Yellowstone Club where new homes are being built.
The best way to get a budget is for you to have a general idea of what you are wanting to do with your home. We can give you a rough ballpark figure over the phone. We are all about maximizing value and how you interior decorate your home in Big Sky will have an impact on what you get in return both as a rental or if you eventually want to sell it after you enjoy it. That means we might give you two ranges or suggest a few pieces where you will not want to skimp. What we have found over the years is those clients that are so tightly budget minded might short change themselves on maximizing value of their home due to a few thousand dollars. I respect that decision, just feel we are not doing our job if we don’t give options that potentially maximize your asset.
Interior design budgets depend on the scope of the work, what you have in mind for a home and how far along you are with the vision of what you want your home to look like. It also depends on what step of the process we are brought in. Many times we can save you significant dollars if we are early enough in the process to help conceptualize furniture and make suggestions on finishes. Being a Montana Interior Design Firm we know what finishes, furniture and accessories are readily available here in Montana. That can be a big advantage in our little town of Big Sky!
I hope you have found this helpful. There are so many factors in Big Sky, MT that can affect your budget for Interior Design and Construction. Time of the year, difficulty of getting product to sight, availability of labor, etc…If you have a project coming up that you are going to need a Montana Interior Design Firm that actually is in Big Sky please contact us. We would love to help and if you want to see some of our projects you can visit our Portfolio pages or you can visit us on Houzz, Pinterest or Facebook.
